LO2:

I have chosen to create a digital portfolio on the career path of a digital media producer. One main reason why I have chosen to do so is to further my my application to further education. As part of my application I will add a link whereby they can access my portfolio and view my work, this is beneficial as they will be able to see my skills and past work, which may make me stand out against other applicants. Another reason I chose to develop a portfolio was for future potential client work, again as it shows what I am capable and makes me favourable to be employed/ chosen.

Digital: In order to make my work easily accessible the files had to be repurposed so they can be accessed by possible employers and university admissions etc. Below are examples of how the files will be repurposed...

1: Adobe Premiere Pro .proj > .mp4
Initially, this file was a Adobe Premiere Pro file (.proj). This file was used as it was a lossless, high quality format and provided the ability to edit all the different audio and visual elements. However, this a large file format and subsequently can't be uploaded and shared easily online, neither can it be easily accessed due to the software used. Subsequently, this project file was exported as a H.264/ MP4 file, this lossy file provided a smaller more compressed version which could then be easily uploaded, downloaded or streamed and is also universally compatible.

2: Adobe Audition .aud > .mp3
As this is a audio product it was created in Adobe Audition (.aud file type). This was used as it is the industry standard software and is a high quality lossless file allowing editing layers of audio. This needed to be repurposed as it is a large file type and uses specialist software meaning it is not easily accessible to everyone. The audio was exported as a .mp3, this lossy is smaller and lower quality but can be easily uploaded to an online platform or distributed. If a higher quality lossless file was needed it would be exported as .Wav file as this is a lossless file used in industry for editing.

3: Adobe InDesign .Ind >  .pdf
This product was created in Adobe InDesign (.Ind). Like the previous file formats this is a lossless high quality file which allows for editing of the elements, however this is a specialist software and not universally accessible and therefore the file would have to be repurposed for use in the digital profile. Subsequently, these documents were saved as a print pdf. This compresses the information into a read only format that is suitable for high quality printing and web upload, this can be exported as either lossy or lossless dependent on the use.

4: Adobe Photoshop .psd > .tiff/ .jpeg/ .png
For this document Photoshop was used (.psd). This lossless format allows for high quality editing of assets in layers and great detail. Therefore, due the large amount of layers and components is is an extremely large size document making it harder to distribute. To repurpose this it was exported as a .tiff file, this compresses all the layers into one smaller file. Although unlike the other file formats this still retains lossless capabilities due to it commonly being used for print. It could also be exported as a .jpeg file, this slightly smaller file type is universally accessible meaning it can be accessed by most easily, and work well with other softwares or purposes, this can either be lossy or lossless depending on which is chosen.

5: Maxon Cinema 4D .c4d > .jpeg/ .mp4
For this Maxon Cinema 4D was used (.c4d), this file format allows for editing of the components. Due to the vast amount of information stored due to the nature of 3d design and animation is it extremely difficult to upload these files online to be used as part of a portfolio. Neither would it be easily accessed as Cinema 4D is a specialist software. To repurpose this the elements were rendered as either a .jpeg for stills or alternatively a .mp4 for video/ animation.

6: Adobe Illustrator .ai > .pdf/ .eps
Illustrator files were used to create this piece (.Ai). This file type was used as it allows for editing of vectors and producing high quality digital and print products due to the lossless capabilities of the format. However, this software is not commonly accessible and easily uploaded online therefore needs to be repurposed. To do so the it was exported as a PDF or .eps file format as these are commonly accessible and are smaller making them easier to download/ upload. Furthermore, both file types can be lossless meaning they retain greater detail in addition to editing capabilities.

7: RAW file (canon raw) .cr2 > .psd/ .lrcat > .jpeg
Raw file type was used when taking the photos as it stores large amounts of information to allow for greater editing in post. However, these files are large in size due to the lossless capabilities of this format and therefore can be harder to upload. As result, once the images were edited in Photoshop or Lightroom (.psd or .lrcat extensions) they were exported as a .jpeg as this is widely available and common format making it more accessible and easy to upload due to the smaller, more compressed size.

Physical:  Alternative physical documents could include...

A: Print documents for posters/ framing
The document could be printed and displayed. This could include mounting and framing a piece, this would be best suited for things such as posters. For this it would would be best printed in heavy gloss or satin stock around 300 gsm, this could be printed either using a inkjet printer or for the larger pieces printed commercially using the process of offset lithography, to produce a high quality print.

B: Print pages as example of magazine page
The document would be printed on a lighter weight gloss paper, something such as 90 gsm silk. Most standard home printers struggle to print on such lightweight stock therefore meaning the files would have to be sent to a commercial print house.

C: Photo/ Sketch book
The images/ work could be presented as part of a sketch book or photo book. This would work well for creatively displaying sketches or images. Some may argue that this is the best way to present and appreciate photography in its truest form. This could come in a variety of sizes including sizes from a5 to a3 etc.

D: Copy of files
A copy of files could be produced and distributed using formats such as cd’s, usb drives and SD cards. For the things such as the audio and visual products that could not be physically displayed and copy could be given allowing whoever to access through whichever means necessary. To make it more creative the cd covers etc could be designed and decorated to reinforce and inform which products they hold. An alternative way to present audio visual products could be a printed QR code. The code could be printed on a leaflet, flyer, poster or something similar, then the user can then scan this code and using a camera enabled device which would take them to a link where they can view the product, the QR code can be incorporated into a design in several ways.

P2

The documents stated above show I variety of skills and assets, thus making it appeal to prospective employers, interviews, freelance opportunities or higher education. The large variety of softwares and media that I have worked in would best appeal to prospective employees and freelance opportunities, this is a strength as it shows diversity and the ability to work in a variety of mediums, it also shows adaptability as I have learnt a range of softwares. Another strength of the media profile would be the content, the full and thorough coursework units that will be featured show an approach to how I work at post 16. Therefore if the work is completed fully and to a high standard alongside a high level it would better appeal to the target audience of higher education as this is a desirable asset and represents the quality of work. Similarly, the quality of work would appeal to other employers or interviewers etc. Another strength of this style of personal profile is that is clearly shows my skills, all the documents will be presented as images with short blocks of text to give context and support the items, meaning those viewing it can see in an easy way what my strengths/ skills are.

A possible weakness to the content of my profile could be the diversity also. Possible future employees may prefer to see more specific examples relating to the job role. For a example the employee for the role of a graphic designer would likely want to see more examples of graphic based work to gauge an opinion of the skills and strengths, however my profile would involve a variety of media ranging from, audio to audio visuals, radio and print which could detract from focusing on the graphic work.

As part of the media profile I have selected the work based on its quality and suitability. I included within the profile my most professional work and recent work as it is of the best quality and best portrays my style and skills. Pieces such as the commissions for the music festival or brief based coursework units such as the magazine production unit all present how I can work with clients and work to a brief, which is admirable to freelance opportunities and employers. Other pieces such as my artwork and design work were selected in order to show my creativity and interests. As a whole I tried to included a mixed variety of examples to best appeal to the role of a media producer or further digital media student.

P3
I am making my personal media profile for the career pathway of a digital media producer. As a result of the role being varied and diverse, I decided to involve a varied and diverse range of media products. Therefore my portfolio would include work covering audio products, visual products and audio-visual products. Such examples of a audio products would be the radio advert and radio show, this demonstrates skills in sound design and use of industry standard software such as Adobe Audition. Similarly, within the profile I will feature audio-visual products/ videos. These products can be seen in the Dronfest promo, film, film trailer and advertising campaign, all of which highlight a broad set of skills which are suitable to the pathway. For example this shows capabilities of using advanced softwares and equipment, an awareness of advertising and overall knowledge of industry processes and techniques. The final form which my work takes is visual, this involves such elements as the web banner, festival banner, posters, magazine and photography. These examples of work show my abilities as a photographer; which is a valuable asset in the role of a digital media producer. Similar to the other pieces, it also represents an awareness of industry standard practices, equipment and software.
