LO1:

P1: Explain the purpose of a personal media profile

A personal media profile is a summary of a persons work, skills and abilities which can then be used for a variety of purposes ranging from advertising services or interviews and job possibilities. This can be formatted in several ways both digitally in the form of a website or alternatively physically through text and sketchbooks. A personal media profile/ portfolio is a good way of showcasing talent and a persons work. This is beneficial when interacting with prospective employers, freelance opportunities, higher education opportunities and interviews as it is a clear, professional and creative way of portraying a persons identity, skills and assets.

A personal profile often contains a persons skill set, meaning that the document shows what the person is capable of with regards to the purpose of their profile. For example the likes of a graphic designer would likely include their skills which enable them to work and excel from others. In this instance it would likely feature information on fluency of graphic design packages such as the Adobe creative suite or 3D graphics softwares such as Cinema 4D and Blender. It is also for common for this to be further supported by physical evidence of past work that has been produced using these software packages.

Not only does this show a persons experience it also highlights their identity, due to the role a graphic designer being creative it is common for each designer to have their own style and ideas of presentation. Therefore the presentation of their past work would be beneficial at showing this to future possible employers or freelance employment as they may desire a certain style or originality to stand out from the crowd. Furthermore, by showing previous work it can also highlight the persons professional identity. Examples of past work with reputable clientele not only shows their achievements and design, it is also valuable at showing them to be reputable themselves which prospective employees would look more favourably upon. To further support this in better detail it could be supported by the persons CV. This would give a more in depth breakdown of past  works, skills, employment and attainments in addition to references all of which further support the past work presented in the profile and validates the persons claims.

Examples of porfolio:
   -Digital

   -Physical

The above portfolios are used to showcase the persons work, skills and connections. These profiles are from those who are graphic designers, therefore the purpose of this is to show their graphic design skills, the clear display of their work in images also allows them to portray their style in addition to their skills. This allows them to portray clearly there strengths to potential employers etc.

A personal may need to be re purposed for specific purpose to ensure it best suits the needs of the intended target audience. This would be so that the work being presented to them is relevant to their need, whether it be and employer, university of freelance job. A way in which this can be purposed is the presentation from digital to physical or visa versa. A digital portfolio can be easily distributed and are an extremely accessible method of showcasing work, with nothing more than a link needing to be sent to the employer, university etc. This is beneficial as it can be quickly and easily distributed, meaning prospective employers can easily gain and idea of you, your skill set, identity and achievement, before a possible face to face interview. Similarly, a digital profile may want to be re purposed to a physical portfolio for face to face situations whereby you interact and can physically show examples. Such examples would be interviews, primarily this would be best suited to the field of graphic design and print. The ability to show finished products and designs in their final forms, such as packaging design or print materials to an employee, better demonstrates aspects of knowledge in the industry and processes used to create such products which is an admirable trait.

Another way in which a personal media profile may be re purposed is through refining it in order to best suit the situation. A large and broad portfolio could be seen as a disadvantage. This is because it could be seen to over complicate things, or detract from the intended work which would be beneficial for the opportunity, with lots of work expressing a broad but not refined skill set. This would be a possible problem as it is not relevant to your employer, client, university etc. Therefore, you could consider removing or including solely work that is relevant to the intended audience

P2: Discuss the uses and benefits of having a personal media profile
Both physical and digiral personal media profiles have their advantages and disadvantages.

Digital porfolios provide the abilty for a person to easily distribute their work quickly to any location or person, whether it be a clinet, emplyer or eductation. This can achieved simply by sharing a link or code with the intended recipient. Another strength would be the accesabilty and possible content, this style of personla media profile would allow for all kinds of work to be uploaed including moving image and large format prints , all organised in an easy to view manner. Another advanyage to a online digital profile would be its price. The cost of setup can be free with sites such as wix.com providing a website building and hosting service with prices starting as £0.00 and upwards depending on what is required. This style of website would also allow people to easilt get in contact with the person, this is as a result of the embeded contact functions with the site.

A possible disadvantage to a digital profile would be its price also. If you were to host your own site using a service similar to wix it would result in a montly subscription cost to keep your website/ pofile up. Another weakness could be that they can easily become ivercomplicated and hard to naviagte which would be a downside in a face to face intreview situation when presenting work, neither does it allow to gauage a good opinion on the overall finsihed print products, such as packaging design which would be best presented physcially to gauge a true representation and feel for the product, this is a benift of pyhsical porfolios. Another advantage to physical porfolios would be the abilty to easily display and present work in scenraious such as face to face interviews.

However, as with the dital profile it also comes with its negatives. Often they are harder or more complicated to distribure, a physcial profile would have to be exchanged in person or alternatively posted to the recipement, this makes it less accesible and possibly more costky. Moreover, there are also costs incurred in the production of a physical porfolio, for example the cost of printing and the materials used as part of it. Physical profiles are also limted to the abilty to easily display a wide range of formats. For example video and audio files can not easily be presented physically, they could be accsed by using things such as a CD or a link but this is not a seamless and easy as presting all the content on a digital profile. Makign the use of physical porfolios best suited the likes of artists, with physcial work, opposed to digitally created work and AV products.
